At Friends of the Nation (FoN), we believe that communities affected by resource extraction deserve a real say in how corporate social investments (CSIs) are designed, implemented, and monitored. Too often, mining and oil companies launch social projects without adequate consultation or accountability, leading to interventions that do not reflect community priorities or deliver meaningful benefits. FoN’s approach ensures that communities, local authorities, and companies work together in a transparent and participatory way.
What We Do
FoN promotes participatory monitoring of corporate social investments to strengthen accountability and ensure that resources truly benefit local people. Our model brings together:
-
Local government authorities who provide leadership and align CSIs with district development priorities.
-
Company representatives, particularly from community affairs or sustainability units—who present investment plans, budgets, and project updates.
-
Community and opinion leaders, including women and youth, who ensure that the voices of those most affected are heard and respected.
By facilitating dialogue and collaboration between these groups, we create a space for joint decision-making, inclusive planning, and shared responsibility.
Why It Matters
Resource extraction companies often commit significant funds to CSIs, ranging from health and education projects to infrastructure development. However, without participatory monitoring:
-
Projects risk being misaligned with community needs.
-
Funds may be misused or diverted.
-
Communities can feel excluded and powerless in decisions that affect their wellbeing.
FoN’s participatory monitoring approach addresses these risks by ensuring transparency, tracking progress, and providing feedback mechanisms that keep all stakeholders accountable.
Building Trust and Transparency
This collaborative monitoring process does more than just track spending—it helps to build trust between companies and communities. By opening communication channels and promoting transparency, FoN helps prevent conflicts, strengthen corporate accountability, and ensure that social investments contribute to long-term community development rather than short-term public relations gains.
Our Commitment
FoN remains committed to working with communities, local governments, and resource companies to ensure that corporate social investments deliver real, lasting impact. We believe that when communities are fully engaged in monitoring, they can hold companies accountable, align investments with local priorities, and secure fairer outcomes from resource extraction.
