Friends of the Nation (FoN) recognizes the enormous potential of small-scale mining to create jobs, reduce poverty, and empower rural communities across Ghana. When properly regulated and practiced responsibly, small-scale mining can contribute significantly to local and national economic development.

Standing Against Environmental Abuse

Despite its potential, small-scale mining has often been linked to serious environmental damage, including deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation. FoN is strongly opposed to such environmental abuse, whether by illegal (galamsey) operators or even by some legal miners who fail to uphold proper standards. We believe that development should not come at the cost of destroying the very resources that sustain life and livelihoods.

Whenever the opportunity arises, we provide support for improved environmental governance in small-scale mining. By engaging both state actors and community stakeholders, we promote practices that ensure natural resources are used wisely, responsibly, and sustainably.

Advocacy for Mercury-Free Mining

FoN continues to advocate for a transition to mercury-free mining technologies. Mercury use in gold processing poses grave risks to human health and the environment, and eliminating its use is key to achieving safer, cleaner, and more sustainable small-scale mining.

Promoting Women’s Inclusion and Empowerment

We believe that women have an important role to play in the mining sector. FoN actively supports women’s associations in small-scale mining and promotes the establishment of women’s cooperative mining schemes. These efforts not only strengthen women’s participation in the sector but also ensure that the benefits of mining reach families and communities more equitably.

Facilitating Exchange and Learning

To ensure Ghanaian miners adopt best practices, FoN facilitates exchange learning programs with other African countries where small-scale mining has been practiced successfully with better standards. These learning opportunities allow miners, regulators, and community representatives to see firsthand what responsible mining looks like, and to bring those lessons home.

Our Commitment

FoN remains committed to shaping a future where small-scale mining contributes positively to economic empowerment, rural development, and environmental sustainability. By supporting miners with knowledge, advocating for stronger governance, and promoting inclusive participation, we are helping communities harness the benefits of mining while safeguarding their environment.
