Strong laws, effective enforcement, and fisher inclusion are essential for sustainable fisheries. Without them, illegal activities thrive, fish stocks decline, and the rights of small-scale fishers are undermined.

FoN’s Actions

Strengthening the Prosecutorial Chain: Building the capacity of the judiciary, prosecutors, and marine police to improve investigation, coordination, and adjudication of fisheries infractions.

Partnership with the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU): Collaborating closely with the FEU to monitor fishing activities, document violations, and improve enforcement presence in coastal communities. This partnership enhances surveillance, strengthens compliance, and ensures fisher concerns are addressed in enforcement actions.

Training FEU Members and Fisheries Prosecutors: As part of our contribution towards enforcing fisheries laws, FoN provides targeted training for members of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit and fisheries prosecutors to equip them with the skills needed to effectively combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Advocacy and Policy Reform: Using evidence from community monitoring, biodiversity data, and fisher testimonies to influence national policies and international reporting processes.

Multi-Stakeholder Engagement: Convening dialogues that bring communities, local authorities, industry, FEU, and national government to the same table to co-create fair and effective governance solutions.
