At Friends of the Nation (FoN), mangrove restoration and conservation is a key thematic area of our work. We recognize mangroves as vital ecosystems that sustain fisheries, protect shorelines, store carbon, and support the livelihoods of thousands of coastal families. Yet, these ecosystems remain under threat from unsustainable harvesting, pollution, and land-use change. Our approach is community-driven, combining replanting, education, and sustainable management to secure both nature and people’s well-being.
The Situation Before Our Intervention – Pra River Estuary

Mangrove harvested at Anlo Beach
The Pra River estuary at Anlo Beach in the Shama District is one of Ghana’s most important fishing grounds and coastal ecosystems. However, before FoN’s intervention, the mangrove forests in this area were severely degraded due to:

Mangrove harvested at Anlo Beach
-
Unsustainable harvesting: Large portions of mangroves were cut down for fish processing (particularly smoking), fuelwood, and construction, with little or no replanting.
-
Loss of nurseries: With fewer mangroves, fish, crabs, and shrimp lost their breeding and nursery grounds, reducing fisheries productivity.
-
Erosion and flooding: The coastline became more vulnerable to erosion and storm surges without the protective root systems of mangroves.
-
Declining livelihoods: As mangrove cover disappeared, communities faced reduced fish stocks and increased hardship.

This situation created a vicious cycle; the more fish catches declined, the more mangroves were harvested to process smaller quantities of fish, further accelerating ecosystem destruction.
FoN’s Intervention – Restoring the Mangroves
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, FoN launched a community-driven mangrove restoration program at the Pra River estuary. Our interventions include:
-

Mangrove restoration and enrichment exercise with FoN
Replanting mangroves: Working with men, women, and youth to establish nurseries and plant seedlings across degraded areas.
-
Protecting regrown stands: Encouraging community patrols and agreements to reduce illegal or excessive harvesting.
-
Community sensitization: Conducting education programs on the role of mangroves in sustaining fisheries, protecting shorelines, and fighting climate change.
-
Promoting sustainable alternatives: Supporting practices that balance mangrove use with conservation, including the introduction of improved fish smoking technologies that require less wood.
FoN has captured these activities in powerful visuals, including community members replanting mangroves in the mudflats, and harvested mangroves which highlight the urgent need for change.
The Benefits of Restoration

Our efforts are beginning to reverse the damage. Communities are now seeing:
-
Reviving fisheries: With mangroves regaining strength, fish and crab populations are returning.
-
Healthier estuary: Mangroves filter sediments and improve water quality in the Pra estuary.
-
Coastal protection: Restored mangroves shield communities from erosion and flooding.
-
Climate resilience: By storing vast amounts of “blue carbon,” mangroves contribute to the fight against climate change.
-
Livelihood improvement: With healthier ecosystems, communities have more reliable fisheries and sustainable wood harvesting opportunities.
Why Mangroves Matter
🌿 Biodiversity Hotspots: Mangroves shelter fish, crabs, birds, and countless marine species.
🌊 Natural Coast Guards: Their roots reduce wave energy and protect shorelines.
🌍 Blue Carbon Champions: They store up to four times more carbon than tropical rainforests.
👩👩👧 Livelihood Lifeline: They support millions of coastal people worldwide.
⚠️ At Risk: Over 35% of global mangroves have already been lost to unsustainable use.
Our Approach
FoN ensures that mangrove restoration is not only about planting trees but about building long-term community stewardship. By engaging residents in both reforestation and education, we foster shared responsibility that delivers lasting ecological and livelihood benefits.
