Small-scale fisheries are the backbone of Ghana’s coastal economy, providing food security and livelihoods for millions of people. Yet, fishing remains one of the most dangerous occupations in the country. Poor handling of premix fuel, lack of safety equipment, and accidents at sea continue to put the lives of fishers at risk.

As part of its commitment to sustainable fisheries governance, Friends of the Nation (FoN) works with fisherfolk to improve safety practices both onshore and at sea.

Safe Handling of Premix Fuel

Premix fuel is a critical input for artisanal fishing, but improper storage and handling can lead to fire outbreaks and injuries. FoN trains fishers and their families on:

  • Safe storage of premix fuel at home and landing sites

  • Avoiding the use of unsafe containers and open flames near fuel storage areas

  • First aid responses in case of fire outbreaks

These trainings have reduced the risk of fuel-related accidents in fishing communities and built greater awareness of household and landing site safety.

Promoting Safety Equipment

FoN emphasizes the use of essential safety equipment before setting out to sea. Fishers are trained and encouraged to always carry:

  • Life jackets

  • Fire extinguishers

  • First aid kits

  • Communication devices (e.g., VHF radios, mobile phones in waterproof cases)

Through awareness campaigns and partnerships, FoN advocates for the availability and affordability of these life-saving tools at landing sites before fish is sold and distributed.

Responding to Accidents at Sea

FoN works with fishers and coastal authorities to build preparedness for emergencies. Training covers:

  • What to do when a boat capsizes

  • How to keep calm and signal for rescue

  • Rescuing colleagues without putting others at risk

  • Basic first aid for injuries sustained at sea

By building local capacity, fishers are better equipped to prevent fatalities and minimize harm when accidents occur.

Harnessing Technology for Safety

FoN is also exploring innovative technologies to improve fisher safety at sea. These include:

  • GPS-enabled devices for tracking canoe movements

  • Emergency alert systems that allow fishers to call for help quickly

  • Mobile applications for weather forecasting and safety tips

Introducing these technologies makes artisanal fishing safer, more efficient, and better connected to rescue and enforcement systems.

Our Commitment

Safety is central to sustainable fisheries. FoN remains committed to empowering small-scale fishers with the knowledge, equipment, and technology they need to stay safe while sustaining their livelihoods.

By reducing risks onshore and at sea, we are helping to protect lives, strengthen communities, and ensure that fishing continues to feed families and drive coastal economies for generations to come.
