Sequence of Events

  1. 18 August 2025, around 8:30 a.m. The fishing vessel Joy George (CR 338-EL) departs Elmina Fishing Harbour with 23 crew members aboard for a routine fishing expedition.

  2. A few minutes after departure, near the breakwaters by Elmina Castle, the vessel strikes underwater rocks or exposed boulders at the harbour entrance.

  3. The impact tears open the vessel’s hull, causing rapid water ingress.

  4. The captain and crew raise alarm and quickly abandon the vessel, managing to reach the shore safely with local assistance.

  5. The Joy George begins to sink gradually and eventually submerges near the breakwater area, partially visible from the surface.

  6. All 23 crew members survive, and no injuries or deaths are reported.

  7. The Fisheries Commission’s technical team arrives on scene later in the day to assess the situation, locate the vessel, and plan towing and salvage operations.

  8. Following the incident, fisherfolk and local leaders raise strong concerns about harbour safety, pointing to sand build-up, shallow navigation channels, and the absence of regular dredging as recurring hazards for vessels departing Elmina.

  9. The Fisheries Commission commits to addressing harbour maintenance and improving navigational safety.
